Sustainable Fisheries
Shellfish de la Mer is committed to the rational and sustainable exploitation of Ireland’s marine resources. Currently, the management of shellfisheries in Irish waters falls under the jurisdiction of the national shellfisheries framework. This management process relies upon a partnership between industry and government (BIM-Bord Iascaigh Mhara/Irish Fisheries Board).
Shellfish de la Mer’s inshore fishing fleet is currently involved in several long-term government led research programmes, which focus on stock assessment and effective management of shellfish species.
Furthermore, our vessels practice ‘responsible fishing’ through endorsement of existing conservation measures.
Lastly, the skippers of our inshore fleet are involved in the national management process, in an advisory capacity, for many shellfish species.
Shellfish de la Mer is therefore leading the way in the development of sustainable inshore fisheries and management frameworks for shellfish in Irish waters.
